Understanding the Three-Part Man: Body, Soul, and Spirit

Scripture tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 that we are made of three parts: body, soul, and spirit. Understanding these distinctions is essential for understanding why we struggle—and how Christ brings true transformation.

The Spirit — Our True Identity

Our spirit is the place of our identity. It is the part of us that was made completely new at the Cross. Scripture says God has given us “everything we need for life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3).

In the moment we believed, our old unregenerate spirit was replaced with a brand-new life in Christ.

In Him, we are now:

Loved. Secure. Worthy. Adequate. Accepted.

This is who we truly are—regardless of what we feel.

The Soul — Where We Think, Feel, and Choose

The soul is made up of our mind, will, and emotions.

This is where our thoughts swirl, our feelings rise, and our “decider” lives. It’s our personality—the unique way we respond to the world.

Because our soul is influenced by experiences, fears, and old beliefs, they don’t always line up with the truth of who we are in Christ.

The Body — How We Experience the World

Our body is simply our physical container—our five senses interacting with the world around us. It allows us to see, hear, touch, taste, and smell, but it does not determine our worth or identity.

When Our Feelings Don’t Match the Truth

Imagine someone who feels anxious, worthless, hopeless, unloved, or inadequate.

Because they feel this way, they may begin to believe:

  • “I don’t matter.”
  • “I’m not loved.”
  • “Something is wrong with me.”

And then they behave in ways that match those beliefs—pulling away from others, shutting down, striving, or living in fear.

But these feelings are coming from the soul, not the spirit.

Transformation Begins With Identity

When we understand who we truly are at the spirit level, it changes everything.

God’s truth begins to reshape our thoughts, influence our emotions, and guide our choices.

Our soul can be renewed, but it must be renewed from the truth of our spirit, where Christ Himself lives.

Because of Christ’s finished work, we already have everything we need.

Our spiritual needs are fully met.

Our identity is secure.

And as we learn to live from that place, our emotions and behaviors begin to align with the life of Christ within us.
